Cleanship was commissioned to design and prefabricate a deckhouse BWTS system suitable for a chemical tanker travelling in extreme conditions off the coast of Canada and the US. This project marks the second deckhouse of this kind that Cleanship has produced for our client, with the lead vessel project delivered in March 2020. Due to the high quality of work delivered, Cleanship was appointed to carry out subsequent turnkey BWMS projects on sister vessels.
Cleanship was appointed to the project just as the Coronavirus pandemic had reached crisis point in most of the world. Therefore, the team faced several logistical challenges due to the restrictions on movement. Our team in Turkey were able to continue with prefabrication, whilst implementing strict social distancing measures throughout. Our lead designer consulted remotely from Glasgow, whilst our Turnkey Retrofit manager oversaw the project process remotely from Italy. Both remained fully contactable during working hours in both the client time zone and that of the fabrication team to ensure any queries were handled efficiently.
The project set a new standard for excellence within Cleanship. Despite challenges presented by the unprecedented pandemic, Cleanship was able to improve on the already impressive turnaround of the lead vessel’s BWTS deckhouse. The team collaborated with Lloyd’s Register early on, with an interim inspection carried out in advance of fabrication work commencing. A further inspection was carried out on steel construction and plates structural fabrication.
As with the lead vessel, this deckhouse was designed to safely house both Atex and Non Atex rated equipment. This enabled the deckhouse to be placed directly above the submerged pumps, significantly cutting down on piping and cabling costs for the owner.
The timescale from initial project commission, to delivery of prefabricated deckhouse was just 9 weeks. The owner was able to rely on a single, experienced point of contact throughout, removing the burden of multiple supplier management. With the assistance of our electrical engineer and our partner company in Turkey we were able to clearly define additional scope items required by class and the shipowner whilst still delivering fast project turnaround and efficient pricing.
