West P&I Club

According to West P&I Club, from easy steps such as the importance of the right PPE and tools to the value of a safety mindset and the requirement for a constant focus on risk assessment, here are West P&I Club’s tips:

  • Safety is no accident. Consistently risk assess, never guess.
  • Always be familiar with and critically assess the environment you are working in.
  • Safety is a form of mind – accidents are a lack of mind.
  • Don’t take shortcuts and obey the safe practices onboard.
  • Know your rights, including the right to control work if you believe conditions are unsafe.
  • Always use the right tool for the job.
  • Always wear the accurate PPE for the job.
  • Always confirm you are fit for the assignment.
  • Illness, lack of training, and intoxication can improve the risk of injury.
  • Never join a space unless you are 100% sure it has a safe atmosphere.
  • Look up; risks are in all directions.
  • Stop the assignment if you think there is a danger.
  • PPE is useless in your cabin.
  • If you are feeling down, seek help.
  • Maintain sufficient communication with other crew members.
